Homeopathy: Great Medicine or Dangerous Pseudoscience?

Homeopathy: Great Medicine or Dangerous Pseudoscience?
Debate on March 22, 2013 at University of Connecticut

Following the debate that was held between Drs. André Saine and Steven Novella at the University of Connecticut Medical Center on March 22, 2013 on whether homeopathy is a great medicine or a dangerous psuedoscience, Drs. Saine and Novella have agree to pursue further this debate into an in depth, professional discussion through questions, answers and comments. On a monthly basis for the coming year, each will ask the other a question that will require a response within a maximum of 30 days. The goal of this debate is to critically examine the contradictory claims made by each party: On one hand, homeopaths are claiming since Hahnemann that homeopathy is the science of medicinal therapeutics par excellence, while on the other hand, skeptics are claiming that homeopathy is a dangerous pseudoscience. By using the best of scientific thinking and by sticking only to facts and sound reasoning on this purely scientific question, Drs. Saine and Novella should eventually come to the same conclusion, as true scientists are self-critical, and true science is self-correcting.

Homeopathy Leads in Italy

In Italy, there over 5,000 homeopathic physicians, 7,000 pharmacies dispensing homeopathic medicines, and 20 different laboratories. In a study in the early part of the last decade, 8.2 millions Italians reported using homeopathy and approximately 90% of them said they were helped by the treatment!!

Homeopathy :: Homeopathy works – not acceptable to British Researchers

I believe British researchers and pharmaceutical lobby have made their mindset not to accept the efficacy of homeopathic medicines in particular and finally not accepting homeopathy system of therapeutics. In the first week of this month, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society has said “Homeopathic products are ‘clearly not’ medicines and should carry labels warning that there is ‘no scientific evidence for homeopathy’ “.

Responding to draft guidance on the advertising of homeopathic medicines published by the MHRA this week, the society expressed concerns that the public does not understand the principles on which homeopathy is based, and said there was ‘general confusion’ about the difference between homeopathic and herbal products.

On 13th Nov. RHEUMATOLOGY – a UK based journal published that “Homeopathy has clinical benefits in rheumatoid arthritis patients that are attributable to the consultation process but not the homeopathic remedy”.

Sufferers of rheumatoid arthritis who visited a homeopathic doctor experienced significant reductions in pain, inflammation and other key markers of the disease, the research shows. Yet it made no difference whether the solution they received was a genuine homeopathic tincture prescribed to treat rheumatism, or a placebo.

Researchers are from the School of Medicine, Primary Medical Care, Aldermoor Health Centre, University of Southampton, Southampton, UK, and Center for Managing Chronic Disease, School of Public Health, The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA and School of Mathematics, University of Southampton, Highfield, Southampton, UK.

Their main objective was to assess whether any benefits from adjunctive homeopathic intervention in patients with RA are due to the homeopathic consultation, homeopathic remedies or both.

Exploratory double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial conducted from January 2008 to July 2008, in patients with active stable RA receiving conventional therapy. Eighty-three participants from three secondary care UK outpatient clinics were randomized to 24 weeks of treatment with either homeopathic consultation (further randomized to individualized homeopathy, complex homeopathy or placebo) or non-homeopathic consultation (further randomized to complex homeopathy or placebo).

Patients were randomized into five groups. Of the five groups, three received a homeopathic consultation (Groups 1 – 3) and two (Groups 4 and 5) did not. The consultation groups were further randomized to individualized treatment (Group 1), a homeopathic complex for RA (Group 2) or placebo (Group 3).

Non-consultation participants were allocated complex (Group 4) or placebo (Group 5); individualized homeopathy can only be prescribed through a consultation.

This study has not disclosed the homeopathic remedies given to Group 1 patients.

Researchers commented “Homeopathic intervention in patients with chronic, active but relatively stable RA has significant clinical benefits that are attributable mainly to the homeopathic consultation process. There appeared to be no specific benefit from the homeopathic remedies themselves”.

Researchers acknowledged the participant homeopaths, June Daniels and Hugh Harrison, and Francis Treuherz, homeopath for help with technical homeopathic queries.

Researchers concluded that homeopathic consultations but not homeopathic remedies are associated with clinically relevant benefits for patients with active but relatively stable RA.

This work was supported by the National Institute of Health Research, the Samueli Institute, USA, the Southampton Complementary Medicine Research Trust and National Health Service Fund for Science.

In the last Researchers mentioned “Disclosure statement: The authors have declared no conflicts of interest.”

This study clearly shows that individualized homeopathic treatment works, but such outcome is not accepted to these researchers.

Recently, we witnessed an International Homeopathic event in India organized by AHML (Asian Homoeopathic Medical League). We were happy sharing our results & success stories amongst ourselves that homeopathy works and we have evidences, but we could not founded any statement for such derogatory agencies.

I raised this question in one of the scientific session whether we are going to release any guideline or policy for homeopathic clinical trials/research which must be accepted universally. In spite of large gathering of senior homeopaths from many countries, government agencies and private parishioners, we could not release any guideline which might have curbed such reports.

I would appeal here that we need to have some mechanism from Indian govt. agencies like CCRH, CCH, HPL and others to establish the scientificity of homeopathic medicines and homeopathy and that to be accepted worldwide.

What do patients really think of homeopathy?

What do patients really think of homeopathy?
Have you ever thought you were incurable? Has your doctor said there are no options left for your particular health problem? If so, it may not yet be time to give up completely.

Many who took part in the following studies had been told they could not be helped but to their delight, homeopathy brought relief.

The following article looks at results from clinical outcome and observational studies in which patients were asked how much they had improved with homeopathy.

Introduction
People regularly receive homeopathic treatment at hospitals and medical clinics throughout England, Europe, South America, Cuba, and India.

Data collected from these clinics reveal the type of complaints treated, the speed and longevity for any improvements, and the degree of satisfaction patients had with their treatment.

Results showed that some of the happiest patients following homeopathic treatment were those whom mainstream medicine had already given up on. Let’s call them the ‘untreatables’. Some of the improvements they reported following homeopathy are truly remarkable.

1. England: Chronic disease improved in 70% of patients
In a 6-year outpatient study at Bristol Homeopathic Hospital, over 70% of patients with chronic diseases, often of many years duration, said they had improved with the homeopathic treatment. 6544 patients were involved in the study and 70.7% reported positive health changes with 50.7% recording their improvement as better or much better. i

The conditions treated were:

Eczema
Asthma
Migraine
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Menopausal problems
Inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease)
Myalgic encephalomyelitis / chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS)
Cancer
Depression
Arthritis.
2. Northern Ireland: “I now have hope”.
A Northern Ireland Government study of 713 patients discovered that alternative and complementary therapies offer significant health benefits for patients, plus savings in government healthcare costs – and that homeopathy did the best of all.

Therapies involved in the study included acupuncture, chiropractic, osteopathy, homeopathy, reflexology, aromatherapy and massage but patients who received homeopathic treatment had the greatest improvement (79%), followed closely by acupuncture (77%). Chiropractic or osteopathic patients experienced 56% improvemtn.

Patients were referred by local doctors, often when conventional treatment had failed, for problems such as:

Arthritis
Joint, back and neck pain
Fibromyalgia
Myalgic encephalitis (ME) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)
Stress related problems
Anxiety
Panic attacks
Depression
Insomnia
Anger and aggressiveness
Headaches and migraines
Shaking and trembling
Chest infections
High blood pressure
Obesity
Psoriasis
Patient reports within the study contained heart-warming statements such as, ‘I feel alive again, instead of being dead’; ‘I now have hope’. ii

3. Dorset, England: “It was the homeopathy”.
A study at the Dorset NHS Community Homeopathy Clinic led to 84% of patients experiencing an improvement in their health with 81% saying it was due to the homeopathy. A wide variety of conditions were seen, the greatest in incidence being depression, anxiety and grief. iii

4. UK NHS Facility: “Positive outcome”
Almost 80% of 958 patients having two or more appointments in this study experienced a “positive outcome” .iv The greatest improvements occurred in:

Anxiety
Catarrh
Colic
Cystitis
Depression
Eczema
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS)
5. Germany and Switzerland: “Disease severity and quality of life demonstrated marked and sustained improvements …”
In a multi-centre study, information was collected from 3,079 first-time patients from 103 different centres across Germany and Switzerland. v The patients were observed over an 8 year period. Interesting findings to emerge from the study were:

On average, disease severity decreased dramatically and improvements were sustained
Those who were sickest at the beginning of the study often noticed the greatest improvement
Three in ten patients stopped treatment because of major improvement
Mental and physical quality of life scores increased substantially
Children improved more rapidly than adults
The authors of the study concluded by saying, “Disease severity and quality of life demonstrated marked and sustained improvements following homeopathic treatment period. Our findings indicate that homeopathic medical therapy may play a beneficial role in the long-term care of patients with chronic diseases.”

6. Germany: Homeopathy Used for Childhood Cancer – “I would recommend it to others”.
Homeopathy is more frequently used in the treatment of childhood cancer in Germany than any other complementary therapy. Most parents who chose to use homeopathy in this study had experienced it previously and said they would recommend it to others in a similar situation. Compared to other complementary therapies, satisfaction with homeopathy was rated as very high. The majority of prescriptions were made in by non-medical homeopaths. vi

7. Switzerland: “Completely Satisfied”
Overall satisfaction was significantly higher for the homeopathic patients in this large survey (3,126 patients) conducted by the Swiss government in which homeopathic care was compared to conventional care. The homeopathic treatments were considered to be low-risk with two to three times fewer side effects than the conventional treatment. Researchers found that 53% of the homeopathic patients were “completely satisfied,” and reports of “positive effects” were significantly higher in the homeopathic group in spite of the greater incidence of chronic conditions (40% vs. 17%). vii

Homeopathy – Worth the Investment?
Clinical outcome and observational studies like those above are preferred for examining the real-world effect of an approach or a treatment. These studies, combined, cover a large range of conditions, many of them severe or chronic, in which significant health improvements were achieved and in which patients expressed a high degree of satisfaction. Several studies also reported savings in healthcare costs. When “health is gold” and positive real-world benefits are desperately needed for all manner of health problems, homeopathy is one form of medicine that is certainly worth investigating further.

RUSSIAN PUBLIC SUPPORT HOMEOPATHY

Russia: “Homeopathy is one of the directions of traditional medicine, which have the full right to be used for the prevention and treatment of various diseases in combination with the methods of evidence-based medicine. This conclusion was reached by participants of the round table “Methods of traditional medicine in modern healthcare”, devoted to the problems of homoeopathy. The event was held today in the Public Chamber. Most participants came to the conclusion that homoeopathy, like other methods of traditional medicine, should be actively studied and taught to students of medical universities.” RG.RU Russian Newspaper 14 November 2017

Note

Homeopathy in Russia dates back to 1824 and during the 1830 cholera epidemic homeopathic doctors actively rendered medical assistance to the victims. The epidemic’s intensification and the difficulties in treating cholera compelled the Russian medical community to send a letter to the founder of homeopathy, Dr Samuel Hahnemann, who suggested Camphora, Arsenicum, Veratrum, and Cuprum. The effect of the first application of these remedies was remarkable. In 1830-31 statistics on cholera treatment were published by the Russian Foreign Ministry: allopathic treatment were 63% mortality, and homeopathic remedies were 11% mortality.

FDA Admits Vaccine Are Causing Autism

These adverse events reported during post-approval use of Tripedia vaccine include idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, SIDS, anaphylactic reaction, cellulitis, autism, convulsion/grand mal convulsion, encephalopathy, hypotonia, neuropathy, somnolence and apnea. Events were included in this list because of the seriousness or frequency of reporting. Because these events are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequencies or to establish a causal relationship to components of Tripedia vaccine.

Interesting Statistics of Homeopathy in India 2016-17  0BY DR MANSOOR ALI

BY DR MANSOOR ALI ON AUGUST 11, 2017 NEWS

Homeopathy in India

Statistics of Homeopathy in India 2016-17

Dr Mansoor Ali

In India, homeopathy is the second-highest funded as well as used category under AYUSH, by the Indian government and public respectively.

Homoeopathy is the second largest system used in India and world

The expenditure on Ayurveda in 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 was Rs 206 crore and Rs 254 crore respectively.

The expenditure on homeopathy was Rs 82 crore, rising heavily to Rs 167 crore, in the same periods.

The trend follows for research as well. For 2016-2017, the budgeted expenditure for Ayurveda was Rs 170 crore and homeopathy was a close second at Rs 120 crore.

While the budgetary allocation in 2016-2017 for allopathy was Rs 37,061.55 crore, AYUSH received Rs 1,326.20 crore. That’s about 3.58% of what allopathy receives.

However government data says that 28% people in India use one of more kind of AYUSH treatments.

India spends Rs 85989000 last year(2016) for research in homoeopathy

More than 2,24,279 homoeopathy doctors,7856 Govt. dispensaries and 207 of Govt. hospitals providing homoeopathy treatment in India

Homeopathy is growing faster than Ayurveda and Unani in India.

The use of homoeopathy is steadily growing in India and as per an analysis by Ministry of AYUSH, this sector exhibited an annual growth rate of 26.3% in the past year, the highest among the other AYUSH modalities.

The organised homoeopathy market in India, which is estimated to be around Rs 2,758 crore, is expected to more than double by 2017.

“The Indian Homoeopathy market is growing much faster than the global market, which is pegged around Rs 26,000 crore,”

India leads in terms of number of people using homeopathy, with 100 million people depending solely on homeopathy for their medical care.

Education and practice of homeopathy is regulated by the Central Council of Homeopathy. The Homeopathy Pharmacopoeia Laboratory works on the standardisation of homeopathic drugs.

Research

Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) is an apex research organization under Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India which undertakes, coordinates, develops, disseminates and promotes scientific research in Homoeopathy.

The Headquarters of the Council are situated in New Delhi and multi-centric research is conducted through a network of 23 institutes/units all over India

The Council formulates and conducts research programs/projects; collaborates with national and international institutes of excellence to undertake evidence based research in fundamental and applied aspects of Homoeopathy; monitors extra mural researches and propagates the research findings through monographs, journals, newsletters, I.E.&C. materials, seminars/workshops. Studies comply with the modern scientific parameters and research is undertaken with the goal that the outcome of research translates into practice and the benefit of the research is extended to the profession and the public.

Education

There are 195 undergraduate colleges for homeopathy in India and 43 for post-graduate education. Out of this 13 PG colleges are in Govt Sector including NIH Kolkatta.

According to an A.C. Neilsen survey in India, 62 percent of current homeopathy users have never tried conventional medicines and 82 percent of homeopathy users would not switch to conventional treatments

15 insurance companies providing coverage to homoeopathy in India

World

Worldwide, over 200 million people use homeopathy on a regular basis.Homoeopathy is currently used in over 80 countries. It has legal recognition as an individual system of medicine in 42 countries and is recognized as a part of complementary and alternative medicine in 28 countries .

The WHO states that Homeopathy is the second most used medical system internationally, with over $1 Billon in expenditures for such therapy.
According to World health Organisation, Homeopathy is the fastest-growing and second-most widely-used system of medicine in the world
